Meet Our Students
Our students are what makes HNC an amazing place to work. Together our staff community ensure that they can progress with confidence to their next steps. Please visit the main HNC website to hear some of their stories, and read more about the diversity of their destinations.
We are passionate about enabling each and every one of our students to successfully earn their life-changing qualifications. The importance of this is heightened by our local context. Kirklees is an area of significant deprivation, around four in ten of our students come from deprived backgrounds. We are dedicated to ensuring that they understand that there are no limits placed upon what they can achieve. We reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, and the experience we offer is genuinely transformational. Under the ‘enlighten’ strand of our curriculum intent, our staff work hard to sustain a respectful, inclusive culture which celebrates our differences, where we learn from each other about the complexity of the modern world, and in which all students and staff feel that they can be their authentic self.
We serve over 2,000 young people across Year 12 and Year 13. Our promise to students is simple – if they attend punctually, commit completely and behave professionally they will become their best selves. Our admissions processes are designed to confirm that students are in a position to meet our expectations. Once enrolled all staff take responsibility for supporting challenging our students to achieve. This is particularly important if a student experiences difficulties and begins to fall behind their peers.
HNC’s ABC Expectations
We expect students to attend punctually, behave professionally and commit completely. The vast majority of our students immerse themselves in the HNC experience and as a staff team we love celebrating their successes and watching them develop into confident, articulate, respectful, young adults. In those rare cases where a student isn’t meeting our expectations, we provide supportive challenge to help them to make better choices moving forwards. All staff are also able to log concerns, which are addressed with Progress Tutors and viewed by parents/carers. Progress Tutors and Senior Progress Tutors co-ordinate the College’s intervention strategies, on occasions this may include a contract. Ultimately, if students do not meet our expectations their place at College may become at risk – as a job would be in the workplace.
Supportive Challenge
As a compassionate College, we understand that our young people are at a significant stage in their development and may require help and advice to ensure they can deal with life’s challenge. However, this is supportive challenge and focuses on equipping them with the tools and strategies they need to deal with any issues affecting them. This is part of our approach to ensuring that our young people can progress with confidence and achieve their ambitions when they leave HNC.
Students can access a variety of services including Student Wellbeing, Careers and advice from their Progress Tutors. As a member of staff, you will be able to make referrals to these services.
