You Matter: Achieving Work Life Harmony at HNC

At HNC we believe that staff wellbeing is the intersection and culmination of connected autonomy, professional mastery and shared purpose.  Staff wellbeing becomes a lived reality through the effective implementation of these three constituent elements.
a. Shared purpose: The College’s shared purpose is encapsulated in the vision, mission, and curriculum intent statements.  The behaviour expectations of staff and students are encapsulated in the College’s ABC expectations and ASPIRE values.  All staff are expected to align their professional decisions and actions with the achievement of our shared purpose.  We make the following promises to our staff:
  1. A vision and mission that is a daily lived reality.
  2. Regular celebration of staff and students who embody One HNC.
  3. The whole HNC community supportively challenge each other to become our best selves.
  4. A shared set of values which underpin every aspect of College life, including a values-based recruitment and appraisal strategy.
  5. A staff team who work collaboratively to deliver the very best for the students in our care.

b. Connected autonomy: Staff are provided with clear and coherent frameworks to operate within whilst being trusted and empowered to implement these frameworks using their professional judgement in ways which are authentic to them, to support the realisation of the College’s shared purpose.  We make the following promises to our staff:
  1. Staff have professional latitude within structured frameworks to implement One HNC in ways that are authentic to them.
  2. The College encourages innovation and supports staff to experiment in a blame-free culture.
  3. Staff are recognised as experts in their role and are trusted to work in ways that collectively meet the needs of our students.
  4. Staff feedback is valued and there are multiple channels through which their voices can be heard.
  5. Clear shared expectations and standards enable the whole community to work together in a respectful, purposeful educational environment.

c. Professional mastery: The College proactively supports all staff to continually grow and develop through training and honest professional dialogue by providing the time and resources required to enable this professional growth.  We make the following promises to our staff:
  1. A bespoke CPD programme incorporated into the College day.
  2. A coaching culture, built on honest professional reflection and a shared ambition to develop and innovate, provides all staff with the opportunity to grow.
  3. A protected CPD budget and allocation of time enables staff to participate in external training.
  4. A focus on process over outcome creates an environment of psychological safety and empowerment in which staff flourish.
  5. Staff are encouraged and supported to control their controllables and are recognised for their professional behaviours.
“The College encourages a culture of innovation, expression and sharing of ideas that will improve the student experience. I shared an idea of putting into a place an online enrolment process to halve the enrolment period and start teaching earlier – a huge and dramatic change. This vision was backed, and we successfully made the change this year with students starting College a full week earlier!”
